John Ray & Sons Purchases Propane Service Van To Add to Its Alternative-Fuel Fleet

Monday, May 16, 2011 – John Ray & Sons has a new service van that runs on propane — a cleaner, greener and cost-efficient fuel alternative to gasoline.

The new purchase continues John Ray & Sons’ commitment to improved fuel efficiency and environmentally friendly products. All the other vehicles in the company’s fleet run on biodiesel in keeping with the nation’s initiative to run more vehicles on domestic energy.

“Nearly 97% of the propane consumed in the United States is produced domestically,” said President Ken Ray. “Using propane as an autogas increases energy security and provides both convenience and performance benefits,” he said.

Businesses and school districts – any organization that has a fleet of vehicles – can benefit from using propane. “Autogas is readily available, lowers maintenance costs and offers fuel cost savings when compared to conventional gas and diesel, making it a smart alternative fuel choice for fleets,” Ray said.

John Ray & Sons can provide a  pump and propane tank with installation for commercial customers. The company also offers 24/7 remote propane tank monitoring system with automatic delivery to ensure the business will not run out of fuel.

Tests conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency show that compared to gas-powered vehicles, propane vehicles produce:

  • Up to 60% less carbon monoxide
  • 15% less carbon dioxide
  • 20% less nitrogen oxide

John Ray & Sons has experience in fleet conversion to greener fuel. In 2008, the company worked with a local transportation company in Albany to convert some of their sedans to operate on a bi-fuel propane system. This system allows traditional gasoline to be used when refueling with propane is not available.

In 2010, John Ray & Sons partnered with the Hoosic Valley School District in their effort to “go green” and improve the cost-effectiveness of their school bus fleet.
The school district now operates nine liquid propane buses to help transport more than 1,200 students daily to 21 different schools. John Ray & Sons installed a propane fueling station for the school district.
